I think at one point in my early adult life I had visions of gallivanting out to the forest with my husband, riding on a horse-drawn sleigh, cutting down a tree while holding a simmering cup of hot cocoa, eating Christmas cookies and then driving home with the perfect tree on top of our vehicle, all the while listening to Christmas music, watching the snow lightly fall outside our window.
And then I got married.
Just kidding. It actually went down something like this. Our first Christmas came and I all of a sudden wanted to get our Christmas tree, like pronto, and I was too impatient to wait for a weekend trip to the forest, so alas there was no forest, no saw, no lightly falling snow and no horse-drawn sleigh. I believe the temps were below freezing and I just wanted a tree. And now.
No forest but there WAS Home Depot.
And so began our Christmas Tree Getting tradition which is 12 years and running. We always {except for this year} get the tree the Monday evening after Thanksgiving. And we usually have in tow someone who is alone or needs family or who is hanging about and simply wants to join in the Clark fun.
The past 3 years, Hiyam and Mimi have joined us. The little ones run around and get into trouble.
Jack picks up trees and sets them up while Hiyam and I evaluate from a distance and then eventually, the perfect tree is picked.
And then we head home and decorate together while listening to our favorite "growing up" Christmas music.{Mine: Kenny Rogers Christmas and Amy Grant's Christmas Album. Jack's: The Ralph Carmichael Singer's Cozy Christmas album}
So that's our 'getting our tree tradition' and if you're still reading you're gonna want to give yourself a great big happy high five. Not necessarily the most exciting post, but one I wanted to get on paper for the kids so that when I'm dead and gone they'll know how our tradition started!
